Why this exists

Worth saving.

Large was a Quake level made at college more than twenty years ago.

Jesterson scribbled the design down drew it all out. Kyu came along and took that design, building the level for Quake.

Then we put it on the college network.

At lunchtime, 20 or 30 people would pile in and play. It became absolute carnage: rockets from the tower, grenades through windows of the courtyard, people falling foul of traps and players chasing each other through a level we knew like the backs of our hands.

We made lots of levels, but this was the one everyone kept coming back to.

“The main design objective was total carnage.”

It looks dated now. Of course it does. But this is a little digital gem of a level that gave us some of the best laughs we had at college.

It was never famous on the internet. Hardly anyone outside college ever heard of it. So this site exists to give it another life.

The level

Welcome to the Tower.

Large is built around one central tower. A rocket launcher sits at the top.

Around the tower is a courtyard with water routes leading into other parts of the map. Corridors wrap around the courtyard, with windows looking into the action, perfect for firing grenades into the chaos and running away.

The whole place is booby-trapped.

One of the notorious traps is at the top of the tower. If you can sprint and strafe your way around the top of the courtyard walkway, the top of the tower comes down. Anyone up there trying to get the rocket launcher instantly becomes part of the decor.

Various other traps lie beyond the main arena. Follow somebody down the water, for example, and you may find a button that makes the pillars disappear, sending whoever is standing there into oblivion.

There are secrets, power-ups and plenty of routes to discover. But there is no real objective.

The objective is to survive.

And the more players you have, the more chaotic it gets.

Carnage.
